Can Sildenafil (Viagra) Help You Last Longer in Bed?

Despite a handful of studies performed about the topic, there isn’t much evidence to support that taking sildenafil can make you last longer in bed due to conflicting results.

However, in a 2007 study, scientists split 180 men diagnosed with premature ejaculation (PE) into three groups: one being given an as-needed 50 mg dose of sildenafil, another being given 20 mg of paroxetine (Paxil), while the third group was instructed to do the “squeeze technique.”

The researchers discovered that the sildenafil group reported “very effective” in treating PE. After following up after three and six months, the sildenafil group reported experiencing substantial improvement in prolonging the time between penetration and ejaculation, besides reporting improved sexual satisfaction scores. The study demonstrated the effectiveness and safety of sildenafil in treating PE compared to the other two groups.

However, earlier studies didn’t support the same claim. A 2005 research split patients into two groups with half given sildenafil and the other given placebo. Patients experienced longer times to ejaculation, but the changes were statistically inconsequential.

It must be noted that there are other drugs besides sildenafil in the PDE5 inhibitor category. For instance, studies have explored how effective other PDE5 inhibitor drugs like tadalafil and vardenafil are for treating PE. A 2017 meta-analysis showed that PDE5 inhibitor drugs are substantially more effective in treating PE than placebo. Moreover, the same study discovered that PDE5 inhibitors paired with SSRI antidepressants are even more effective in treating PE.

How long should men last in bed?

Simply put, however long as you and your partner, please.

But if you’re that concerned about what other individuals do and say: a 2005 study asked sex therapists how long penetrative vaginal sex should last. The overwhelming majority of respondents reported that 3 to 7 minutes was “adequate,” and 7 to 13 minutes as the benchmark for “desirable.”

What is Sildenafil (brand name Viagra®)?

Sildenafil, also known under its brand name Viagra, is an oral medication used to treat erectile dysfunction (ED). Sildenafil works by boosting blood flow throughout the body, specifically the penis. Sildenafil belongs to a category of ED drugs known as PDE5 inhibitors; this category includes drugs like sildenafil (Viagra), vardenafil (Levitra), tadalafil (Cialis), and avanafil (Stendra).

As the name of their category implies, they work by inhibiting an enzyme called PDE-5, which causes blood vessels to dilate and allow more blood to flow throughout the body. This includes the penis, which causes an erection.

PDE5 inhibitors like sildenafil require a prescription from a licensed healthcare provider.

Researchers aren’t entirely sure how sildenafil may improve PE outcomes, but they speculate that erections produced by these drugs may inhibit sensory receptors involved with ejaculatory latency.

What is Premature Ejaculation (PE)?

Premature ejaculation is a sexual dysfunction where an individual ejaculates sooner than he or his partner desires. It can take a toll on your sexual performance and can be very unnerving, but PE is quite common, with over 30% of the male population experiencing the condition to some degree.

What are my treatment options for Premature Ejaculation?

If you find yourself ejaculating too soon, try the following techniques to last longer:

The edging method

The edging method, also known as the “stop-start” method, is a technique you can practice first by playing solo, and then with your partner. It’s simple: when you’re engaging in solo play and feel like you’re about to ejaculate, stop stimulating yourself until the urge to come passes. Then, resume masturbation or stimulation. Once you’ve gotten a few reps in, you’ll recognize when you should precisely stop and start again to prolong sex.

The “squeeze” method

Here, you engage in sexual activity and carry on until you feel like you’re about to come. Then, you or your partner squeezes your penis right where the head meets the shaft. As you or your partner hold it, squeeze it for a few moments until the urge to ejaculate subsides.

Using topical creams, wipes, or condoms with numbing solutions

Certain condoms and topical creams contain a minuscule amount of lidocaine or benzocaine to reduce sensation and extend the sexual activity. Topical anesthetic creams can also be applied to the penis to achieve the same effect.

Other companies sell disposable, over-the-counter towelettes containing numbing substances to be applied to the penis before engaging in sex; they can also help minimize sensation and help you last longer.
