Icariin is the active ingredient in a traditional Chinese medicinal plant known as epimedium, which is also known as horny goat weed or yin yang huo. Horny goat weed is a supplement used in traditional Chinese medicine as a treatment for erectile dysfunction (ED). Icariin is available in a variety of preparations such as powders, extracts, tablets, and capsules, and is marketed as an aphrodisiac or ED supplement.

What are the differences between icariin and sildenafil?

Icariin (horny goat weed) and sildenafil citrate (branded Viagra) work by inhibiting the PDE5 enzyme, which is responsible for “shutting down” an erection.

However, icariin is a milder PDE5 inhibitor than sildenafil and other ED drugs like tadalafil (Cialis), vardenafil (Levitra), and avanafil (Stendra), with icariin clocking in at about 80% less potent than sildenafil.

Icariin can be purchased over the counter as an herbal supplement in varying formulations and potencies. Meanwhile, sildenafil (Viagra) requires a prescription before being dispensed in different dosages as needed.

Does icariin (horny goat weed) work well for ED?

We already know that icariin works similarly to sildenafil but with significantly less potency, but does it actually work? According to studies conducted on animals, icariin does work to inhibit the PDE5 enzyme, allowing the penis to saturate with blood to produce and keep an erection. In another study conducted on rats, it was found that icariin appeared to improve nitric oxide synthesis in rats with circulatory damage compared to those given a placebo.

However, a word to the wise: thus far, there haven’t been any studies conducted on humans as far as icariin and ED are concerned. Icariin may very well work differently in the human body than in animals.

What other ED treatment options do I have?

Are you running into erectile problems every now and then? If so, it’s a good idea to consult your doctor and tell them about your medical history. ED is typically an indicator of a more serious underlying health condition, such as hypertension, cardiovascular disease, or diabetes.

Once your healthcare provider has fully evaluated you, they will determine if you’re suited to be prescribed an ED drug like sildenafil (brand name Viagra), tadalafil (brand name Cialis), and vardenafil (brand name Levitra)—all of which are safe and effective options for treating ED.

On the other hand, some individuals prefer to go on natural supplements like icariin or horny goat weed to treat their erection difficulties. However, your mileage may vary depending on which natural supplement you choose to use. Some options are better supported by science than others.

Ultimately, your erectile function will be at its best when you’re at your best. Simple lifestyle changes like stopping smoking, reducing alcohol consumption, getting adequate amounts of exercise, and consuming a healthy diet may be more than enough to sort out your ED problems.
