Erectile Dysfunction and Frequent Urination: Are They Related?

You might be wondering whether frequently urinating might be related to erectile dysfunction (ED).

Well, you’ve come to the right place.

Your body’s level of hydration largely determines the frequency and amount of urine you’ll be producing over the course of the day. It’s quite normal to notice that when you drink more fluids, such as water, you’ll need to empty your bladder with clear, more voluminous urine than usual.

Let’s cut to the chase: there isn’t a one-size-fits-all “ideal” number of times one has to urinate daily. The average person urinates around 6-8 times a day (depending on fluid intake). If you need to urinate more often than eight times every 24 hours, it may indicate something awry with your urinary tract.

Frequent urination may interfere with your overall quality of life and well-being. You might be frequently interrupted while working or while in social situations, affecting your enjoyment of recreational events.

At times, having to go to the bathroom too often can be an uncomfortable experience for your bladder. Nocturia, or the condition where a person frequently needs to urinate at night, may affect your regular sleep cycle, contributing to your tiredness during the subsequent day.

The Lowdown on Frequent Urination: Causes

That said, what does frequent urination indicate? It can arise from a variety of medical conditions and as a side effect of medicines, besides the usual lifestyle factors such as habits. Here are some of the most common causes:

  • Urinary tract infections (UTI). UTIs can affect urination in a variety of ways, such as frequent and/or painful urine flow, or a sharp, burning pain when you take a leak. UTIs may develop in any part of your urinary tract, such as your kidney, bladder, and urethra.
  • Prostate enlargement or benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH). These two conditions refer to the same thing. BPH is a common condition affecting middle-aged to senior men involving the growth of the prostate gland. Frequent urination is a sign of prostate enlargement, as is running into difficulties with controlling urine flow and accidental, uncontrolled leakage of urine.
  • Kidney and urinary tract diseases. Other illnesses or conditions affecting the urinary tract and its related organs may lead to problems controlling the bladder, such as a frequent need to urinate.
  • Damage/trauma to the nerves. Trauma, injuries, and diseases that affect the nerves in the penis, pelvis, and groin area may hinder your ability to control your urine and cause frequent urination.
  • Caffeine overconsumption. Excessive caffeine consumption is linked to an increased urination frequency, particularly for individuals diagnosed with or who show symptoms of an overactive bladder. You might find yourself urinating more frequently when you take a lot of caffeine-loaded sodas, coffee, energy drinks, or tea.

Certain lifestyle factors may alter your urination frequency, such as alcohol or recreational drug use. Psychological factors such as anxiety and depression may also cause frequent urination. Lastly, conditions such as poorly-managed diabetes, strokes, tumors, and cancers in the pelvis and bladder can cause frequent urination. Consult your urologist to learn more.

Taking certain medicines known as diuretics may enhance your urination frequency, as is consuming artificial sweeteners in “zero sugar” or “low-calorie” food and drink may also contribute to frequent urination.

Lastly, your daily fluid intake may also dictate how often you urinate in a day. For instance, if you consume more water daily, you’ll typically get up to pee more often than if you tend to take in less fluids.

The Lowdown on Frequent Urination: Does Sildenafil Change Your Urinary Habits?

No beating around the bush here – there is NO existing evidence that sildenafil (Viagra®) causes any changes to your urination frequency.

On the contrary, sildenafil, based on the research, may actually help control urination frequency in men with prostate enlargement and ED. In a 2007 study released in the Journal of Urology, men with prostate enlargement and ED were less prone to developing lower urinary tract symptoms and ED once going on sildenafil.

On the whole, there is no apparent link between using sildenafil (Viagra®) and its other related PDE5 inhibitor drugs and frequent urination.

The Truth About the Link Between Frequent Urination in Men and ED

Here’s another no-BS answer: frequent urination doesn’t cause ED or other sexual dysfunctions by itself.

However, certain underlying medical conditions that may cause frequent urination have been linked to ED.

For instance, when diabetes is not well-managed, benign prostate hyperplasia, trauma or injuries affecting the spinal cord, and therapy such as radiation are all linked to frequent urination. These factors are also equally linked to a higher likelihood of developing ED.

Erections are a product of optimal blood circulation and nerve function. Therefore, any medical conditions that affect either may lead to ED and/or more frequent urination than usual.

One thing is for sure, though – there is no causal relationship between ED and frequent urination. That is, frequent urination WON’T cause ED, and ED WON’T cause frequent urination in and on its own.

The Lowdown on Frequent Urination and ED: Closing Words

Frequent urination and ED may occur simultaneously, but they are separate issues that require different treatments.

While ED does not lead to frequent urination, or vice versa, it is still important to address both conditions as they can cause discomfort and distress. Fortunately, both ED and frequent urination are treatable with lifestyle changes, healthy habits, and, in certain cases, medication.

If you have either of these conditions, it is strongly advised to consult your primary care provider for assistance and treatment options. No matter the issue or combination of issues, there are always solutions available to ensure you can live comfortably and happily.

Frequent urination and erectile dysfunction may be two separate conditions, but they are both manageable. With the right help and advice, you can overcome both and enjoy a healthier and more satisfying life.
