Looking for info on tadalafil (Cialis®)?
If you are, you’re probably one in about 200 million men affected by erectile dysfunction (ED).
So sorry to hear that – but ED is increasingly becoming an exponentially common condition among men of all ages.
One of the primary causes of ED is the unhealthy modern lifestyle – that of obesity, stress and anxiety, alcoholism, and living a sedentary life – all of which contribute to an individual’s chances of developing ED.
Fortunately, there’s no shortage of FDA-approved ED drug treatments in branded and equally effective (yet cheaper) generic versions.
For instance, Cialis® has been around since 2003, and its unbranded version, tadalafil – named after the active ingredient in Cialis® – has been around since 2017.
Generic and branded tadalafil work, in the same way, comes in the same dosages and produce the same effects.
Tadalafil belongs to the PDE5 inhibitor family of ED drugs, which include sildenafil (Viagra®), vardenafil (Levitra®), and avanafil (Stendra®), which work similarly.
Erections are produced when nitric oxide is released, triggering the production of an enzyme called cGMP.
cGMP controls the flow and stimulation of penile arteries and blood vessels, allowing robust blood flow to produce an erection, and contracting them thereafter to maintain it.
PDE5 is an enzyme that breaks down cGMP. PDE5 inhibitors prevent that from happening so that cGMP can do its thing and keep your tent poles propped up, so to speak.
But how long does tadalafil actually keep your stiffy hard enough to enjoy vigorous and enjoyable sex? Let’s find out.
How long does tadalafil last?
Tadalafil distinguishes itself from other PDE5 inhibitors of its class in that it has a longer duration of efficacy. Unlike its more established counterpart, sildenafil (Viagra®), whose efficacy time frame is only up to four to six hours after taking a single dose, tadalafil can work up to 36 hours on the same single dose.
Wait a minute – did we really say 36 hours?
Yes, but this doesn’t mean you’ll have a continuously firm erection for 36 hours after taking tadalafil. It doesn’t work that way.
Tadalafil requires sexual arousal and stimulation to work – that is, only when you’re in the mood.
This is the difference between tadalafil’s duration of efficacy and actually producing an actual erection.
Some guys are skeptical that some erections can be hard for “too long.” Still, one of the reasons why you’re asking how long tadalafil lasts is priapism – the medical condition consisting of a prolonged and sometimes painful erection lasting for over 4 hours.
Priapism is a rare side effect that can cause permanent and irreversible damage to your pecker. If you experience an erection for longer than 4 hours, seek immediate medical attention.

How long does it take before tadalafil kicks in?
Tadalafil, just like its branded equivalent, Cialis®, can kick in as soon as 30 minutes after you have taken your dose (with or without food), and its “peak” hits around one to two hours after taking it.
Ideally, you should plan to take your dose around an hour or two before you plan to engage in sexual activity. Tadalafil will help relax your penile muscles and boost blood flow in the vicinity – but will not cause an erection on its own.
Is tadalafil safe?
A 2017 review of 16 studies spanning over 5,000 patients comparing sildenafil and tadalafil found that both ED drugs have enjoyed a high safety profile.
Both of them showed similar efficacy rates in treating ED and patient satisfaction with the ED treatment.
However, psychological results were higher with tadalafil, possibly because of its duration of action, reducing the pressure associated with the shorter effective time frame of sildenafil (which can cause performance anxiety in some men).
Do female sexual partners prefer men who take tadalafil?
According to a 2008 study, nearly 80% of female partners preferred their partners to take tadalafil over sildenafil because it allows them to enjoy spontaneous, unhurried sexual intercourse and activity due to its longer-acting action.
How long does it take until tadalafil hits its peak?
Tadalafil for ED can be taken once daily or on an as-needed basis. Tadalafil reaches peak concentrations in the bloodstream in one to two hours. When taking tadalafil as needed, remember to give it time to work before engaging in sexual activity about two hours prior.

What substances should I refrain from taking while taking tadalafil?
When taking tadalafil, avoid consuming alcoholic beverages – that “liquid confidence” might come back to haunt you right when you can least afford it. Besides, it’s a known erection killer, which is the last thing you need when you’re trying to treat your ED.
Consuming grapefruit and grapefruit products may cause interactions with tadalafil. Avoid consuming said products with tadalafil, and discuss any consumption or amount of grapefruit in your diet with your doctor before taking tadalafil.
Unless your doctor instructs you, don’t take tadalafil with any other ED drugs or increase or reduce your tadalafil intake.
The bottom line on tadalafil
Ultimately, tadalafil won’t give you instant erections from just taking it on its own. In fact, tadalafil wouldn’t help you get your soldier up and about unless it came with a Playboy centerfold with it.
Tadalafil, like all other PDE5 inhibitors, helps your system to achieve the essential conditions to produce firmer erections. However, you still need to get aroused or stimulated by something.
Moreover, taking more than the prescribed amount of any of these ED drugs won’t make any difference in making it harder, bigger, or longer.
Proper use of tadalafil and ED drugs can work like a charm against the physical manifestations of ED, allowing you to walk tall into the bedroom.
However, suppose your erectile dysfunction issues are coming from some other source, such as problems with self-esteem or confidence, intimacy, or relationships. In that case, there might be more to treating your ED than just taking an ED pill. Consult a mental health professional if you feel like this might apply to you.
Nevertheless, tadalafil remains an excellent option for plenty of ED issues – so if you’re at your wits’ end about unreliable or unsatisfying erections, consult your doctor to determine whether tadalafil might be suitable for you.
